Slates Newsletter - 17 January 2008

17 Jan 2007
Rating System Added Today
As you may have noticed, there is now a star rating system for Slates. Only vote if you like something because there are no negatives, only a scale of positives.
Right now, the ratings are only being accumulated. Soon, once we get some votes in, you'll be able to see a list of Tablets by their rating. We will also start to publish the top few Tablets every day for everyone's enjoyment.
You can't vote on your own Tablets, and you can only vote once on any single Tablet. You can change your vote at any time, so it may appear that you get to vote more than once, but you will just be updating your previous vote.
We encourage everyone to actively rate other people's work. The more you do, the more accessible the good stuff. If you don't get people voting on your work, don't get discouraged. There are currently over 5000 Slates users, with about 10000 Tablets, that's a lot to read.
I'd recommend clicking the "Recent" button on a daily basis and seeing the latest new stuff being added. It's a good way to find new and intersting things and friends.
Facebook Outage
Early yesterday morning and through part of the day, Facebook was experiencing some big problems with all applications. They lost their communication chanel to the applications (DNS). We're sorry you had to experience that, but just want to let you know that all of your information is safely stored away and backed up daily, so don't freak out if you come to write in your Slates and you can't get to them. They will be back, and nothing will be lost. Just be patient. Yesterday's incident took nearly 8 hours to clear up, and it was painful to me worrying about all of you and what you might be thinking. I'm sure a few people removed Slates in anger and frustration. So, please, if this happens again, just hang in there.

What's going on with Slates
We're up to 4200 users, and it's still growing at a slow but sure pace.
Some interesting statistics:
4983 invitations have been sent by users of Slates
677 people installed Slates because they received an invitation
3555 tablets have been created that are visible to everyone and actually have something on them
Blaine is still in the lead with the most tablets -- 109 -- wow!
Umut is in second place with 53 tablets, but I can't understand what he wrote about.
One person invited 116 people to use slates, name is Anonymous.
Blaine again is in the lead by making 57 comments on other people's Slates.
If you want to see more of this kind of stuff, and view Slates from active people, click on the "Community" link in your menu. You can sort the list by clicking on the top column of each category.
Putting Titles on your Tablets and Slates
Many of you aren't changing the titles of your Tablets and Slates. I suspect it's because you don't know how to do it. When other people browse or search through Slates, it's nice to see a title instead of "Untitled Tablet".
Here's how to do it:
When you're viewing your Tablet, click the Edit button. A bunch of small edit icons appear next to the Title, Keywords, Summary, etc. Click any one of these icons to edit that particular item. To change the Slate title, you need to go to the Slate page (you get there using the breadcrumb navigation), and click the edit icon next to the Slate title.
Image Permissions
When you put images in your Tablets that are from your Facebook albums, they take on the permissions of the album. If the album is set to be visible only to you, or just friends, then the photos will only be visible to you or your friends.
If you want everyone to see the photos, here's how to do it:Go to your privacy settings (top right of your facebook screen), click on Applications, then on Photos privacy settings. There you will be able to set the privacy for each of your photo albums.
Discussion Board
We added discussion boards directly in Slates, so you don't have to go to the Slates about page in Facebook to make suggestions or converse with other Slate users. From your Slates home page, just click "Discussion". We really value your input, and want to hear if you have any problems. If you don't tell us, we can't fix it. Please give us feedback and help everyone that's using Slates.

New version of Slates released.
You probably already noticed the new version of Slates is now running. We've done a lot of changes to the interface in an attempt to make it easier for you to use. Most of the features are the same since we tried to keep the original version up to date while we were developing the new version.
Yesterday afternoon we had a failed attempt at updating the version. Things weren't working quite right, people couldn't save their tablets. Luckily we caught the problem quickly and reverted to the previous version until we could fix the problems, which I managed to do at 4AM this morning.
Please, we want feedback. Do you like the new version? Do you hate it? Write a review for us on the Slates about page. If you don't tell us what you want how are we going to make the product better and better.
We're now up to 3500 users, growing by about 100 a day. It's not by any means a fast growing application, but you who are using it are doing some great stuff. Please, tell your friends about it. Let's build this into the next great thing in Facebook.

A few notes about what's going on with Slates.
We hit the 3000 user mark this week. Everyone is posting great stuff, and it seems to be getting better and better as you get to know Slates and all the things you can do.
The new version is really just about ready, but we keep thinking of new things to add, and that means more testing, so please be patient, you'll be glad you did. Next week for sure :-)
We just improved the publish feature so it uses the newest feature of facebook. Your published tablets will now appear not only on your friends' news-feeds, but may also spread to the facebook community at large if people vote on your Tablets to say they like them. (You may have noticed a new "Thumbs Up" icon on every item on your news feed that appeared in the last couple of days. Vote for your friends' Tablets and help them to get noticed.
A request: We would really appreciate it if you write a review on the Slates about page. The more reviews, the higher in the application directory we can get, and that means more users and more great posts. Just go to http://www.facebook.com/apps/application.php?id=4240867762 and scroll to the bottom and you'll see where to write reviews. Even just a few words would be great.

Hello Slates Users,
The Slates Application user base is growing every day. As of today there are over 1300 users, and lots of great creative work is going on. I'm amazed at the poetry and stories that people are writing. People are using Slates for many things such as personal journals, sports scores, meeting agendas and catalogues. The highest use seems to be poetry, with short stories coming in a close second place.
You may have noticed some problems over the past few weeks, pages not loading, no-response errors, etc. Some of this may be our fault, but mostly it's Facebook growing pains. Facebook is still being developed, and new features are being added every day to make your experience more pleasant and to protect your privacy. Please be patient. Things are getting better every day.
New Features:
We've added some great new features and enhancements to Slates:
1) Now you can search and see what other people are doing. Search by keyword, or click on one of the quick links like 'poetry', 'stories', and 'recent'.
2) We've added a 'Publish to Feed' link on each Tablet page. When you're finished with your story, click on Publish to send it to your mini-feed. It should then appear on your friends' News Feeds on their home page.
3) Enhanced the comments feature. Now you'll be notified if a friend makes a comment, and you can see how many comments have been made from the Slates home page.
4) Improved the privacy features. Now if you mark a tablet as only visible to you, or just your friends, then even the title of the table won't be visible to outsiders.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Websites Given to All California Schools
September 12, 2007 - Petaluma, CA
WildFireWeb Inc. is giving free websites to all 13,000 K-12 schools in California with their latest offering - WebSchoolPro. What's the catch? Carefully selected sponsors pay for the opportunity to advertise on the school websites, and in turn the schools receive a portion of advertising revenue generated from the sites.
As teachers and administrators in Sonoma, Napa, Sacramento, Alameda and San Mateo make their way back to school this fall, they are discovering a host of new feature-rich resources available to them through their websites. Sonoma Valley Unified School District, the first district to sign up for the free service, has converted all of their schools' websites to WebSchoolPro sites, and according to Barbara Young, Superintendent, "teachers are taking advantage of the ease and speed of WebSchoolPro to reach out to students beyond the classroom…it's empowering".
Teachers can create their own virtual classrooms with expandable space for notes, homework assignments, files, resources, photo galleries, calendars and updates for parents. Parents can stay in touch through integrated forums and a built-in alert system. School staff can easily keep schedules and other site content up-to-date with very little technical knowledge. Changes to the websites are done with standard web browsers so the need to buy and install special software has been completely eliminated.
In an era where schools have limited budgets and resources, WebSchoolPro gives power back to educators by encouraging and improving communication, participation, and fundraising efforts for schools.
Advertising on School property, be it the gymnasium wall or the school web site doesn't come without controversy, but as CEO Blaine Transue says, "it can be done right, we can change the paradigm of school funding and we can make it a win-win solution for everyone". "There are plenty of appropriate sponsors out there and this gives them a mutually beneficial way to offer support for schools".
When it comes to defining the criteria for sponsorship and advertising, WildFireWeb encourages districts to actively participate in the process. According to Transue "it's time for schools and districts to take control and form positive relationships with mindful sponsors who support education. It's about doing it correctly…the bottom line is simple, if it doesn't work for the schools, it doesn't work for us".
Advertisers benefit in turn by gaining exposure to a highly targeted audience of schools, educators, parents and students. Local advertisers stand to gain the most since they can
Since visitors to a school's website are typically locals, demographics can be determined more exactly than other systems that identify users by their Internet Service Provider's address or by browser cookies that infringe on a visitor's privacy and security.
Assisting school communities with technology services and support for over 20 years, founders Steve Sweet and Blaine Transue saw the need first-hand for a unified, consistent, and affordable solution for building and managing school websites. They set out on their mission with four goals in mind: 1) Make the power of the Internet accessible to all school communities. 2) Empower educators to leverage technology for their students and their own professional development. 3) Stimulate parent and community involvement in today's busy world. 4) Enhance a school's available funds and fundraising efforts.
